Another vote for the SV. I had dirt experience but started on a 600cc sportbike. Not the best choice at all, I wish I'd started on an SV instead. Much nicer throttle response, much more linear power delivery. This is crucial. SS bikes are fast and fun, but much less forgiving with their on/off throttles and crazy top end power.

FWIW my SV was my 4th sportbike and I'd say the most fun. As stated above, it'll do more than you (or I) can. Many people use SV's as track bikes and compete against 600cc I4's because they exit corners so well due to the twin's power delivery. I did 10k miles in a year on mine, I only sold it because I started to do more freeway commuting and touring and the naked version wasn't so great for that.
