Tesla fixes incorrect 691 horsepower claim for P85D

Tesla fixes incorrect 691 horsepower claim for P85D by publishing the correct number as 463 hp due to battery limited maximum motor shaft power.

Ever since the release of the high-performance Tesla P85D, its combined horsepower of 691 has been quoted liberally and loudly.
CEO Elon Musk confirmed the rating on “60 Minutes.” It was printed in a Tesla Model S brochure. And a multitude of automotive magazines and websites listed it.

But one group of Tesla owners questioned whether this number is accurate. In an open letter to Musk last month, the owners challenged Tesla’s statements on the P85D’s horsepower.
“We are writing to you as a group of concerned Tesla owners, investors, and perhaps most importantly, supporters … because the Tesla Model S P85D falls considerably short of actually making 691 horsepower,” the letter stated, which was signed by 71 Tesla owners.

Now, Tesla’s Chief Technical Officer JB Straubel discussed horsepower ratings for electric vehicles (EVs) on the company blog:
“There is some confusion about our methodology for specifying ‘equivalent’ horsepower ratings for our all-wheel drive, dual motor vehicles,” Straubel said.
Straubel also noted that, to calculate the overall horsepower of a dual-motor EV, the rating of the front motor was added to the rating of the rear motor.

P85D overrated again?

First Tesla claim:. 691 hp motor power (221 hp front, 470 hp rear)
Fixed Tesla claim: 463 hp due to battery limited maximum motor shaft power (340 kW)

Now 90 hp (66 kW) power appears in official governments registration documents:
UK - V5 governments EU certificate led interpretation of ECE R85
Germany - official vehicle governments registration document/certificate acc. ECE R85

Acc. ECE R85 electric vehicles are tested for peak/maximum power and 30-minute-power (maximum power during 30 minutes test run).
So, the fixed claim seems to be the peak power and 90 hp (66 kW) the 30-minute-power.

Compared with other EVs:

......................... Tesla P85D .......... BMW i3 .......... VW e-Golf .......... Mercedes B Class Electric Drive
peak power: .......... 340 kW ............ 125 kW ........... 85 kW ................ 132 kW
30-minute-power: ... 66 kW .............. 75 kW ..........- 50 kW ................. 65 kW

Tesla Ordered To Pay $6,000 Fine Per Model S P85D Sold In Norway For Listing Wrong HP Figure - 13 hours ago by Eric Loveday

Tesla Ordered To Pay $6,00 Fine Per Model S P85D Sold In Norway For Listing Wrong HP Figure

Tesla Motors recently lost a ruling in Norway on the listing of the power output of its Model S P85D, and as such may have to shell out 50,000 Krones ($6,000 USD) to each of the ~150 owners of the car in the country, Electrek reports. The company has some time to yet appeal the decision if they choose.

Why the fine? Well, it seems Tesla wrongly listed the horsepower rating for the Model S P85D. Tesla had stated that the P85D had a rear motor with 467 HP and a front motor rating at 224 HP for a combined rating of 691 HP. However, the vehicle was never capable of delivering all that power to those motors.

Tesla has made a statement on the Norway’s Consumer Council’s decision:

“Testing done by Tesla and independent third parties has demonstrated that the Model S P85D’s acceleration and motor power numbers have always been accurate, even understated. With respect to acceleration, Tesla described the P85D as having a 0-100 kph time of 3.3 seconds, and Motor Trend and others actually achieved a time of 3.1 seconds. Similarly, the motor power numbers used by Tesla were legally required and confirmed as accurate by European regulatory authorities. Based on this information, the Consumer Council previously resolved these issues in Tesla’s favor. Tesla will be reviewing the decision by the Consumer Disputes Commission to better understand the conclusion that it reached.”

Tesla pays disgruntled owners – Today’s Business

126 Tesla owners have sued the car manufacturer to get a price reduction because they believed themselves wise, both on acceleration and that the model P85D had not the effect of 700 horsepower as the owners thought the car was sold with. Owners have also complained on the car’s quoted acceleration of 3.4 seconds from zero to 100 km/h, which was measured with a so-called “rolling start”.

Previously, Tesla met six other Tesla owners in Forbrukertvistutvalget, where Tesla lost and had to pay back a discount of between 20,000 and 50,000 nok. Tesla appealed and the cases were waiting on the outcome of this trial.

the Case was going up in the Oslo district Court on Monday, 12. December, in which ten of the owners should try their cases for court. The remaining cases depended upon the outcome in this case.

Monday should electric carmaker Tesla argue with a variety of Tesla owners in court.
On Sunday evening, however, Tesla made a settlement with the disgruntled owners, according to Dagens Næringsliv.

Here is the settlement:

Tesla owners demanded a price reduction on 129.700 kroner, which was equivalent to the price difference between the Model S P85D and Model S 85D.
The settlement involves a cash payment of half of what the Tesla owners demanded; 65.000 kroner ($7691 / €7277).

Alternatively, owners may choose between six different solutions, which consists of various upgrades or credit on product purchases. The alternatives to a pure cash payment is well for the 80,000 crowns, or upgrade of the vehicle to the so-called “ludicrous mode” which gives the car faster acceleration, as well as a slightly lower cash amount. Tesla also offers owners a hjulpakke combined with a cash amount of 35.000 kroner, or 50,000 in well.

the Settlement involves the in addition, that the parties pay their own legal fees.
