Tesla Model S crashes into a gym, driver claims autonomous acceleration, Tesla says driver’s fault

In a post on Tesla’s forum that has since been removed, the Model S owner described the accident:

"Recently, my wife experienced a near fatal accident when she was slowly parking at her gym. The car violently exploded into full acceleration and could have easily killed people in the gym."

Tesla spokesperson assured us that there’s no defect:
"Tesla’s cars do not accelerate without the driver instructing it to do so. In every situation where we have received a customer claim about this, the vehicle’s diagnostic logs have confirmed that the acceleration was the result of the driver pressing the accelerator pedal."

Tesla Model X crashes into a curb in a parking lot at the Creekwood Dog Park in Bradenton, Florida. Tesla owner claiming event of autonomous acceleration causing crash.

Tesla reviewed the logs and told us that the accident was the result of the driver pressing on the accelerator pedal.

Then another similar accident happened just last week in Lexington, Massachusetts, where a Model X crashed into a garage door causing damage to the vehicle, the garage and even another car parked in the garage.

Here’s a GIF from the security camera at the propriety:

Again, the owner told Electrek that the vehicle accelerated on its own, but Tesla reviewed the logs and told us that it showed the accelerator pedal was pressed.

There were several other claims made by owners in similar accidents and a Tesla spokesperson told us that each time it was brought to the company’s attention, they could verify that it wasn’t an autonomous acceleration:

The state DMV released a set of guidelines for autonomous vehicles, but suggested that auto makers should refrain from using the terms “self-driving,” “automated” or “auto-pilot” in advertising their vehicles.

Tesla told by German gov't not to use 'Autopilot' in advertising

FRANKFURT -- German Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt has asked Tesla to stop advertising its vehicles as having an Autopilot function because this might suggest drivers' attention is not needed.

Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) had written to Tesla to make the request, a transport ministry spokeswoman said on Sunday, confirming a report in the Bild am Sonntag newspaper.

"It can be confirmed that a letter to Tesla exists with the request to no longer use the misleading term Autopilot for the driver assistance system of the car," she said in a written response to a Reuters' query.

Tesla Model S Crashes Into Sushi Restaurant

Police on the scene did not arrest or charge the Model S driver at the time of the incident. Neither drugs nor alcohol were believed to play a role in this accident.

It seems likely that the driver mistakenly hit the accelerator pedal when trying to apply the brakes. This is now the second time a Model S has crashed into a restaurant. In the previous instance, the Model S driver blamed it on unintended acceleration.
