Oh boy, to be honest, it's difficult to get the smell out. We actually cook our food outside on the stove next to our BBQ for this reason. It's not hopeless, it would take a lot of lysol and fresh paint, but it's doable.

It is probably "garam masala" that has a strong smell. We added a second kitchen with a closing door and a huge vent to not make the house smell.

What are my options guys? I need to come up with a solution because the idea of repainting the whole house and replacing the carpet doesn't sound appealing. Is this something that is considered objectionable by Indian standards? Enough so that I can say something about the smell?

Robert, maybe bring it up with them in conversation. I don't think it is objectionable, but maybe just pretend to be very curious and ask them what was on the counter. It could have also just been that they did some sort of prayer before moving in. So I would just get to the bottom of it, and then make your decision from there.

DJ, thanks for the India section, I didn't even notice you added it until now.

Robert, while the smell from Indian food/cooking does get into the clothes you are wearing, I've never heard or had it soak into my hands/skin merely from being in the same location. I find that very far from the norm. I guess it's possible whatever it was happened to also be on the door handle?

In any case, I'd just ask them. Mention you've had many Indian friends/colleagues and that you had never had an experience like that.. and that you were just concerned because of the long term smell/damages possibility. Or something like that.:P In any case, just be subtle about it, but definitely ask them.

Yep, thanks for the India section. Will be interesting to see how many on the forum are TS enthusiasts.

I'm of East African Indian descent.
