The French tire manufacturer Michelin presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA 2017) a Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tire connected with a smartphone application that reproduces tire pressures and temperatures to the driver via an ergonomic interface. This system is currently being tested on the road and circuit by some fifty members of the Porsche Auvergne Club on various vehicles of the brand. I was able to interact with the project manager Michelin who presents us exclusively this novelty via this video.

A new interactive experience for the driver
Michelin is known for its constant innovations in order to push the limits of the tires and offer even more to its customers, both on the circuit and on the road. On the occasion of the IAA 2017, Michelin exhibited on its stand its latest innovations and in particular a novelty that went unnoticed because not visible at first glance. Anxious to inform you about the latest innovations in the field of automotive tires, I was able to discuss with the Michelin project manager for this innovation aimed above all at drivers who enjoy driving on their cars. Michelin will in future offer a new innovative service via connected tire technology, combined with the new Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S. The offer could be available in the future on other tire ranges. Michelin's objective is to accompany the driver throughout his driving experience by proposing recommendations adapted to the types and conditions of use of the tire before taxiing. This gives real-time pressures and temperatures and their influence on the behavior of the vehicle during taxiing as well as a detailed tire-by-tire summary after taxiing to make the necessary adjustments.

Technology used
The technology used by Michelin, without going into technical details, uses a sensor inside the tire that measures pressure and temperature, communicating this information in real time to an independent box installed in the vehicle, powered by 12 volts. This box, the size of a pack of cigarettes, is not connected to the vehicle's CAN or LIN embedded networks, thus not interfering with the equipment and calculators of the car. The information is then sent from the case to a smartphone using the Bluetooth protocol. In order to access this information, it is enough to install on a smartphone the application, specially developed by Michelin and its partner Openium, available for phones running Android or IOS. Presentation of the service via its dedicated Michelin application After the launch of the Michelin application (automatically detecting the language of the smartphone), a big central button Start and 4 menus are available on the homepage: My runs, My car, Manometer, Your opinion.

Start button
By pressing the start button, a window is displayed to give the pressures of the 4 tires with a color code depending on the prerequisites of the used vehicle, which is also indicated as well as the type of driving (road or circuit). Pavement conditions are also modifiable (dry or wet). The choice of the circuit is also possible, important step to be able to fully benefit from this assistance to the driver. A "start" button starts the application when you run on the track to run. At this point, all tire data is recorded and analyzed in real time by the application. An integrated stopwatch is also available and starts at the start of the application at the start of the circuit assignment. After switching the smartphone to landscape mode, new data on the vehicle's behavior appear via a graph indicating the evolution of the vehicle's behavior: either more understeer or more oversteer.

My runs
All the information recorded in the different runs is available at any time. The available data include track and circuit name, tire pressure and temperature changes throughout the run. By tilting the phone horizontally, a graph showing the profile of the car used indicates the pressure on each tire that is colored according to the recommendations. A bar allows you to navigate through the history to observe the behavior of the tires throughout the run. The lap times are also searchable with the fastest lap time that is highlighted. The user can evaluate his run by checking a number of stars (5 stars being the best rating). He can also annotate remarks on his feelings during the cession track. The feedback of each tire is done in real time with the display of a color code to tell if the pressure is in the right window of recommendations. Finally, the application offers a very interesting feature to improve and compare its performances with club buddies who have done better time or worse time: replay the run by discovering what happened via an interactive map the speed in real time, a gauge indicating the forces G and a simple graph showing the pressures of the 4 tires at each location of the circuit.

My car
This part allows you to configure the parameters of your car in order to have the tire pressure recommendations according to the vehicle and the tire and the type of use (road, circuit, wet or dry road).

Manometer
The pressure gauge function allows you to view the tire pressure and their temperature in real time via a very clear interface.

Your opinion
This last part allows the user to give feedback and feedback on the application in order to improve it and enrich it with new features.

Interest of this application
Beyond offering a new driving experience, such an application could well extend the life of its tires even in circuit use. Internal tests at Michelin showed that it was possible to multiply by more than 2 the number of laps made with the same set of tires following the recommendations of the application.

Marketing
To date, Michelin does not communicate details on the price and the offer that will be offered. This system, which is still in the experimental phase with 50 members of the Porsche Auvergne Club, will not be marketed until 2018.
