The most cost effective and reliable way is to buy a refurbished macbook from apple themselves from their refurb store.

Yes and no. The refurbs are usually returned or exchanged machines or they were over stock that never sold when a model refreshed. You could get a good one or you could get one that is permanently problematic. The former is more likely, but I've seen the latter happen too.
