10 of the Best Road-Legal Race Cars

Motorsport is a wonderful thing, especially when a motorsport sanctioning body requires a road-legal version of a competition vehicle. Homologation — the process by which manufacturers are made to make road-going versions of a race car in order to satisfy a particular sanctioning body — has produced some of the world’s most epic road cars.

As you might expect, many of the Top 10 Road Cars in the video below come from the Group B era of rally racing, with legends like the Renault 5 Turbo, Peugeot 206 T16, and the Sierra Cosworth. And the rally influence wasn’t just for Group B either, with the Escort Cosworth was also a homologation special.

In endurance racing, you had the rule-stretching Nissan R390 GT1. Nissan made exactly one road-going version, but if that’s all that the rules called for, then that’s what you get. Look a little further back in Le Mans history, and you’ll find the legendary Porsche 917. As with the Nissan, only one road-legal version was created. If you see any others, it’s a pretty sure bet that they are a kit car. Last, but very much not least, is the Jaguar XKSS. This one is based on the Jaguar D-type, so much so, that there is a registry of which D-types were transformed. You’re more likely to find an XKSS than an R390 GT1, but not by much. Jaguar’s factory caught fire at the time of production, resulting in less than 30 being built.
