All-New, Ultra-Lux Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet

Luxurious Off-Road Drop-Top G650 Landaulet Limited to Just 99 Units

Have you ever been concerned that the current Mercedes-Maybach S-Class doesn’t have off-road abilities? Or that the current G65 AMG is great off road, but doesn’t swaddle your hindquarters in enough quilted leather? Well, then they’ve finally built the perfect car for you: the Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet.

This is perhaps the Reese’s peanut-butter-in-my-chocolate mixture of comfort and off-road. The G650 mixes great interior features with serious expedition capabilities. We’re talking 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque from a twin-turbo V12. It provides intensely smooth power delivery in ultra-comfortable confines.

From the outside, this hyper-comfort Gelandewagen looks more or less like any other G-Wagen. It’s built on the same platform as the recent G500 4X4, with the addition of a soft-top roof. The fender flares have been crafted of carbon fiber, for some ungodly reason. The truck sits pretty high, with over 18 inches of ground clearance, thanks to portal axles. There have been soft-top G-wagens before, but this is currently the only G in the lineup to sport an open roof.

However, the major changes in the transition to Maybach status can be found inside. The rear seats are private airline-inspired recliners with massage capabilities. The cup holders are temperature controlled. And each seat has access to a tray table and 10″ entertainment screen. The leathers are sure to be supple. Every single touchpoint will likely be superior to anything you’ve ever felt before.

Alas, the driver and front passenger can’t experience the full joy of the landaulet; their part of the compartment is covered with a hard top. But rear-seat passengers can fully lay back under the stars with a soft-top roof. Available in three colors, it can retract at the push of a button. The rear compartment can also be isolated from the front with a retractable glass partition that can even be electronically tinted, if so desired.

This truck is expected to debut at the Geneva auto show next month. While pricing has not yet been announced, it will surely be quite expensive. The S-Class based Maybach starts about 11% higher than the starting price of the non-Maybach S600. If a similar percentage can be added to the G65’s $221,325 price tag, you can expect the Merc-Maybach G650 Landaulet to cost nearly a quarter-of-a-million dollars. Are you impressed yet?
