Ex-Ferrari Salesman Alleges Odometer Rollback Devices

Whistleblower claims Ferrari dealers are using DEIS diagnostics testers to reduce odometer readings, with Maranello’s blessing.

According to The Daily Mail, a former Floridian Ferrari salesman is alleging that something illegal is afoot at Ferrari dealers. And mind you, this comes from a man directly responsible for the sale of hundreds of prancing horse sports cars in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach over the span of a 22-year career.

Robert “Bud” Root is bringing a pair of lawsuits against both his former employer, Ferrari of Palm Beach, and one of his former clients. The suit claims they engaged in conspiracy to avoid paying state sales tax. The suit also alleges the rolling back of odometer readings. These claims could bring felony charges in criminal court, if proven true.

Root claims he was fired only after he discovered the Ferrari dealer’s DEIS device was capable of rolling back the numbers on the digital odometers. For wealthy collectors, having a low-mile example could be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars extra in resale value. If the dealerships are, in fact, rolling back odometer figures, it goes beyond deceitful. It could also be potentially devastating to a new owner who misses scheduled maintenance. Ferrari N. V. is also mentioned in the lawsuit, as Root alleges the rollback device cannot operate without the go-ahead from higher-ups in Maranello.

As such, Root’s lawyer has prepared a class-action lawsuit against Ferrari. They’re attempting to gather all Ferrari owners in the U.S. who believe their mileage figures to be falsified. What originally began as a wrongful termination suit by Root against the dealer has now ballooned into a huge effort to take on Ferrari corporate directly.

This is a fascinating turn of events. Check out the full report by The Daily Mail, then let us know your thoughts. Do y0u think your Ferrari has had its odometer tampered with?
